What's included

Level 1 expands the Entry Level scope to meet Defence's additional requirements, and clears your organisation for information up to and including PROTECTED. It also lets you sponsor personnel security clearances up to Baseline.

Suited to

Companies that want to self-sponsor security clearances, and companies closely involved in Defence, such as those designing or manufacturing critical combat systems and components.

L1 inclusions

  • Everything in Entry Level
  • Deliverables adjusted to Level 1 requirements
  • Additional questioning in the gap analysis
  • Further provisions in the governance documentation
  • Additional cyber security policies
  • Essential Eight maturity level increased
  • Floor plan analysis, FOB and CCTV check
  • Expanded action plan

What Level 1 requires

Level 1 sets extensive requirements for a robust security framework in the Defence supply chain. Defence reviews and updates them to keep pace with emerging threats. Requirements include:

  • An established security management system
  • Regular risk assessments
  • Physical and personnel security measures
  • A designated Security Officer overseeing security practices
  • Specific cyber security measures, including secure network infrastructure and regular vulnerability testing
  • Storage and transmission protocols for sensitive information

Manage Baseline clearances in-house

Level 1 lets your company manage personnel security clearances internally and sponsor them up to Baseline, giving you more flexibility in staffing Defence work.

Your CSO and SO should hold Negative Vetting 1 (NV-1) clearances to allow self-sponsorship of company staff. That check confirms the people overseeing your clearances have been properly screened and found suitable to handle sensitive information.

Reporting security incidents

Level 1 members must report any suspected or actual security breach to Defence immediately. We help you build the processes and governance procedures that make that reporting compliant.

A larger scope than Entry Level

Level 1 generally adds time, complexity and risk to the implementation. The gap analysis goes deeper, the documentation carries further provisions, and your cyber controls move to a higher Essential Eight maturity level. Physical security includes floor plan analysis and FOB and CCTV checks, and may require a site visit.

We price Level 1 after the initial consult, once we have developed your risk profile and assessed your requirements.

Questions

All questions

  1. Which levels let us sponsor our own security clearances?

Entry Level does not allow self-sponsorship. Level 1 lets you manage personnel clearances in-house and sponsor up to Baseline. Level 2 lets your Security Officer sponsor and manage clearances up to Negative Vetting 1 (NV-1). Many firms seek Level 3 for self-sponsorship up to Negative Vetting 2 (NV-2).

Your CSO and SO need clearances of their own to sponsor others. At Level 2, for example, the SO must hold at least NV-2.

  2. Which DISP level do I need?

In our experience, Entry Level is sufficient for most companies in the supply chain. Level 1 suits companies that want to self-sponsor security clearances, and Levels 2 and 3 suit organisations working on classified projects. We confirm the right level in your initial consult.

  3. Do we have to report security incidents?

Yes. Members must report any suspected or actual security breach to Defence immediately. We help you build the processes and governance procedures that make that reporting compliant.
