Key challenges

  1. Complex security protocols

The requirements demand an in-depth understanding of security protocols, often with specialised training and continuing education for staff.

  2. Investment in systems

Protecting classified information needs robust security systems and IT infrastructure that adapt to evolving threats.

  3. Ongoing administration

Compliance needs documentation and regular audits, a continuing administrative load.

  4. Clearing staff and contractors

Waiting on third parties to sponsor clearances can delay projects and add uncertainty.

  1. What's involved in DISP compliance

DISP compliance brings construction firms several challenges. The requirements call for a deep understanding of complex security protocols, often with specialised training and continuing education for staff. Protecting classified information needs strong, adaptable security systems and IT infrastructure. And compliance continues: documentation and regular audits are an ongoing administrative load.

Meeting these standards takes a strategic, well-resourced approach. We have worked with a number of small and large construction firms with existing Defence contracts.

  2. Gain a competitive edge

Level 1 in the personnel and governance domains, for self-sponsorship of security clearances, is often a pivotal asset for construction firms. It speeds up clearances for staff and contractors up to Baseline and reduces dependence on outside parties to start and manage them.

That means fewer delays, more predictable project timelines and a stronger position when bidding for Defence construction projects, where clearance readiness can decide the contract.

  3. How to begin

The first step is a thorough security assessment to understand your current posture and the gaps against DISP requirements. Then you develop and implement a security plan that closes them across personnel, physical, and information and cyber security, and complete the security vetting and clearances your work needs.

  4. Benefits beyond Defence

Beyond eligibility for Defence projects, compliance improves your internal security protocols and awareness and reduces your exposure to information theft and cyber threats. That stronger security posture can appeal to clients in every sector.

  5. How we help

We run the security assessment, build your security plan and documentation, set up the governance and personnel structures for self-sponsorship, and lodge your application.

Relevant services

All services
  • DISP gap analysis

Every engagement starts with a complete audit of your existing processes across the four DISP domains: governance, personnel, physical and cyber security.

  • DISP documentation development

We write the policies, processes and plans your organisation needs to meet Defence’s requirements for identifying, assessing and managing security risk.

  • Application lodgement

Incorrect lodgement costs companies time and contracts, and can lead to a rejected application. We prepare and lodge your application and handle Defence’s questions.

  • Compliance maintenance

DISP membership comes with ongoing obligations. Our maintenance support complements your internal team and reduces the load on senior executives.

Industries

  • Engineering & Design

Engineering and design firms building military hardware and Defence technology. Most tenders in the field require DISP membership.

  • Manufacturing & Fabrication

Manufacturers and fabricators supplying Primes and Defence. Protect drawings, parts and premises, and meet the DISP level your contracts require.

  • Consultants & Contractors

Advisory, engineering, cyber, project management and logistics consultants. A mixed-level approach can give you clearance flexibility at a lower cost.

  • Aerospace & Space

Military aviation, R&D and satellite technology firms. Manufacturers in the sector typically need Entry Level at minimum.

  • Shipbuilding & Naval Engineering

Shipbuilders, naval architects and their suppliers. Meet Prime and Defence requirements across yards, workshops and design offices.

  • Logistics & Supply Chain

Logistics and supply chain firms supporting Defence. Entry Level is often sufficient, depending on the clearances your staff need.

  • Maintenance & Support Services

Maintenance, repair and support providers working on Defence equipment and sites. Clear your people and keep your membership current.

  • MSPs & MSSPs

MSPs and MSSPs supporting Defence suppliers. Choose the right cyber standard, reach the required Essential Eight maturity and plan accreditation.

Roles

  • Directors & CEOs

What DISP asks of company leadership: the commercial case, the Chief Security Officer role and the right level for your business.

  • Compliance Officers

For chief compliance officers: the four DISP pillars, the documentation behind them and systems that keep compliance sustainable.

  • CTOs & IT Managers

For CTOs and IT managers: the cyber requirements at each DISP level, choosing a standard and planning accreditation without over-investing.

  • Business Development

For business development leaders: what DISP membership costs, what it opens up, and how clearance readiness can win work.

Company size

  • SMEs

For SMEs entering or growing in Defence. Entry Level often suits best, delivered as a fixed-price package.

  • Large Enterprises

For large organisations with multiple sites and teams. Coordinate DISP across functions and build on the frameworks you already run.

  • Multinationals

For multinationals with Australian operations. Fit DISP alongside global policies, systems and reporting lines.

Questions

  1. When does a business need DISP membership?

DISP becomes mandatory when you take on Defence contracts or projects that involve handling, accessing or creating classified information. Government and Prime contractors are also increasingly asking for DISP membership in their tenders, so many businesses join before a specific contract requires it.

  2. Does DISP membership help beyond Defence contracts?

Yes. Beyond eligibility for Defence work, compliance improves your internal security protocols and awareness and reduces your exposure to information theft and cyber threats. That stronger security posture can appeal to clients in other sectors too.

  3. Can we hold different levels in different domains?

Yes. The level is set for each of the four domains, so you can select the level each one needs. Many of the consultants we work with hold a higher level for governance and personnel, which allows self-sponsorship of security clearances, and Entry Level for cyber and physical security. This keeps costs down, but it does not suit every business. We confirm the right mix in the initial consult.
